Where to begin. After multiple treks to Colorado this past year, the momentum of exploration fueled the fire within me to seek a new challenge: braving the unknown alone.

This idea of venturing off in solitary was a seed planted as I traveled back to Ohio with memories of endless stars, windy mountaintops, sentiments of wild freedom and campfire ash still adorning my jacket and my mind. After being happily covered in dirt from one hike to another on Colorado soil, a month in my urban apartment already roused an unsettled sense of cabin fever.

From those heights, a lot of emotions tend to flow through one’s system. Personally speaking, I was somewhere between nervous and terrified, as I’ve always been afraid of heights.  But the higher I walked, and the more spectacular the views became, I felt a new emotion bubbling up: freedom.

The beginning

One afternoon, when I was six-months pregnant, my husband and I left for a music festival on a whim. He took our guest bedroom mattress and stuffed it into our car. Laughing at ourselves, we threw our bags into the car and headed to a weekend of music. It was that weekend I realized something: I love the campfire experience, but not the camping experience.
